Selecting A Bird Cage

Pet birds come in many sizes and types and all of them have their very own individual character traits. As you already know, pet birds love to play and often do funny things. Bird lovers know that they need to spend good time with their bird to give him the attention he needs.

However, when it comes to housing their birds, people are usually lost as to the size of bird cages they need. Perhaps you are unsure what to look for and which bird cage to select in the shops.

Usually smaller birds need smaller cages unless the gaps between the cage wall is small enough. For example, if you stick a cockatiel into a large parrot cage, he might be able to escape through the bars on a stainless steel bird cage. As smaller bird like a finch or parakeet will have even more chances with a large bird cage.

Just check he gaps between the cage bars to see whether your bird could escape or not. If you are in doubt, look at another cage instead.

I prefer to build my own custom build bird cages made with untreated pine and snake wire from the hardware store. I think this is beneficial for your bird because most store bought bird cages are too small anyway. This is the best way to determine whether the space you have allocated for the bird house will be large enough.

For those days when you work long hours it is better for the bird to have a larger house. If your bird is stuck in a small cage, he will get depressed and might even start to rip his own feathers out.

With a larger cage there will be more room to place bird toys and stuff to entertain your bird while you are not home. So do it right from the start and choose a cage that is large enough to house your little pet. Your pet bird will thank you for this.
